Jallikkattu & Rekla: History, Significance, & Witnessing It In Tamil Nadu
Introduction
Many know the cultural splendour of Pongal in Tamil Nadu, but fewer truly understand the deeper meaning behind traditional Tamil sports like Jallikkattu and the Rekla race. What do these age-old practices signify, and where can you witness them in their most authentic form? This blog takes you straight to the heart of the action.
Jallikkattu & Rekla - History and Significance
Jallikkattu and Rekhla are two main highlights of Pongal celebrations in Tamil Nadu.
1. Jallikkattu

History of 2,500 years: Jallikkattu, also known as ‘Sallikkattu’ and ‘manju virattu’, is a historically significant game played on the day of ‘Mattu Pongal’ [the third day of Pongal]. The history of the game dates back beyond 2,500 years.
The bull-taming: In this game, a bull is let loose towards a group of players from a gate. The gate is referred to as ‘vaadivasal’. The man who holds the hump of the aggressive bull for 30 seconds will win the prize. In some places, they should hold it for a distance of 15 meters instead of 30 seconds.
Significance: It is considered a way to preserve the native cattle breeds, like the ‘Kangayam’ breed bulls. Bulls that perform well in this game are considered to be highly valuable for breeding and preserving the strong lineage.
Further, it is regarded as a symbol of bravery. Historically, bull-taming served as a way for a man to demonstrate his strength to a girl he was willing to marry.
2. Rekla Race

Bullock cart race: Rekla race is a traditional bullock cart race, which is more famous in the Kongu region of Tamil Nadu. Like Jallikkattu, Rekla races are also hosted in several parts of the state.
The sport has evolved from the use of bullock carts for transportation and activities related to agriculture [like loading grass for cows, manure, etc.]. Even this sport plays a significant role in preserving the native cattle breeds.
