Introduction

Some months ago, I took a spontaneous day trip from Bangalore. I didn’t plan it weeks in advance. I didn’t overthink it but somehow, it turned into one of the most memorable weekend escapes I’ve had in a while

Honestly, I didn’t see it coming.

How It All Started

As someone who loves to explore new places, food, stays, you name it, I'm always looking to do something fun on the weekends. I was aware that Bag2Bag has launched their curated Experiences packages because I have been a loyal user for a while now mostly because their coupon deals are genuinely good, and when you travel as often as I do, every rupee saved adds up. So when they launched their curated Experiences packages, I was curious. I spotted the Big Banyan Vineyard package starting at just ₹500. But I chose 3 activities which included access to vineyard tour, tasting tour, grape stomping, so the total came down to ₹1628 approx. For someone based in Bangalore, it felt like a no-brainer.

Getting There

The total trip from Bangalore, including my ride back via cab, came to roughly ₹1600 approx. which, honestly, didn't feel like a lot. The vineyard isn't very far from the city, making it a perfect quick escape without needing to plan days in advance.

The Wine Tour: Where It Gets Interesting

This was the heart of the experience, and it completely changed how I think about wine.

We started with a proper walk through the vineyard row after row of grapevines, each variety subtly different from the next. Our guide explained how different grapes yield entirely different characters in wine: different sweetness, acidity, texture. It sounds like something you'd nod along to without really absorbing, but standing there among the vines, it actually clicked.

Then came the wine tasting session, easily the highlight of the day.

Each wine got its own glass (a detail that matters more than you'd think), and before tasting, we were guided through the aroma swirling, sniffing & noticing. The aromas are surprisingly distinct once you know what to look for. Fruity notes, earthy undertones, hints of oak. It was such a sensory experience. I'd never done anything like that before, and it genuinely made a difference. Wine I might have dismissed in a restaurant suddenly had layers I could identify.

They pair the tasting with a charcuterie and cheese board that included soft cheeses, hard cheeses & crackers designed to complement each pour. I didn't think little cubes of cheese could make such a difference until I tried a sharp cheddar alongside a bold red and suddenly understood what food pairing actually means (i know).

What the Experts Say About Vineyard Experiences

The World Food Travel Association highlights that immersive food and drink experiences are now one of the strongest drivers behind destination choices. Travelers aren’t just looking to see places anymore, they want to taste, feel, and understand them.

As Erik Wolf, Executive Director of the association, explains: “Food and beverage experiences create deeper, more lasting memories than many traditional sightseeing activities.”
Winemaker Robert Mondavi once said: “Wine is the most civilized thing in the world.”

Stand in a vineyard for an hour, and that sentence begins to feel less poetic and more factual.

Closer to home, Karnataka's wine country around Bangalore has been quietly growing. Big Banyan, established in 1999, is one of India's pioneering wineries and produces a range of wines including Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, and Zinfandel, varieties that reflect just how versatile Indian viticulture has become.
Travel writers often observe that vineyard visits work so well because they combine education, sensory pleasure, and natural beauty in a single outing, something few other day trips can offer.

Should You Go?

Absolutely especially if you're in Bangalore and looking for a weekend experience that feels premium without breaking the bank. Bag2Bag’s Experience Package made the whole thing frictionless to plan, and the vineyard itself delivered far beyond what ₹1,600 would normally get you.

Go for the wine. Come back a little more curious about the world in a glass. Because sometimes, the best escapes aren’t the farthest ones, just the ones you didn’t expect.
