Introduction

The state of Kerala is adorned with natural beauty, and will perfectly match the phrase ‘The God’s Own Country’. The long serene coastal strip of Kerala is our point of discussion in this blog. If you are planning for a joyful tour with family or along with friends, then the coastal beauty of Kerala will never disappoint you. Kerala has many lengthy and clean beaches. Out of these gems let us pick a few diamonds [not the lab grown one, lol! 😜]. Let us take a virtual tour of this coastal strip from north Kerala, and move towards the south.

 

 

Muzhappilangad Beach
 

The northern part of Keralam, usually referred to as ‘Malabar region’, comprises four districts namely Kasargod, Kannur, Kozhikode, and Wayanad. The Muzhappilangad Beach is located in Kannur district.

The beach is the longest drive-in beach in Asia, which makes it special. The visitors are allowed to ride their vehicles on the shores of the beach, on payment of a small charge. The beach gifts the visitors with a charming sunset, and a beautiful riding experience. If you are interested in driving on the shores, then consider the evening time during the sunset. The experience is outstanding.

Hotels in Muzhappilangad:

For visiting Muzhappilangad beach, it is recommended to stay at a hotel in Thavakkara. Thavakkara is very close to Payyambalam beach. Muzhappilangad is around 17 km from Thavakkara. So staying there will enable you to visit both Muzhappilangad and Payyambalam beaches, as both are located in Kannur. As Payyambalam is very close to the Kannur city, staying there is preferred.

The golden sands of the beach will seem like the beach warmingly welcoming the visitors. The sides of the shores are prettified with beautiful palm trees nearby the shores.

This beach gives you an opportunity to swim and surf. There is no doubt that this is a perfect destination for family and friends. The beach is in close vicinity to the Kannur town. As both Muzhappilangad and Payyambalam beaches are located in Kannur, you can try visiting both these beaches. It is best to visit both these beaches in the evening hours. 
Further, travelling from Payyambalam to Muzhappilangad would be around 35 to 45 minutes.

Since there is no specific timings in Muzhappilangad beach, you can start from Payyambalam  by 04:45 to 05:00 pm in the evening and you will reach Muzhappilangad beach within 06:00 pm. As mentioned above, this place is very close to the city so staying here would make it even more comfortable for returning from the place too.

If you are planning to visit Payyambalam beach, it is advisable to stay at hotels in Thavakkara, in Kannur. These hotels are near the Payyambalam beach, from where you can travel to Muzhappilangad.

 

Kozhikode Beach

Kozhikode beach will definitely grab your eyes with its serene golden sands embellished with palm trees nearby. The beach offers a perfect sunset view point.

Kozhikode Beach compliments the visitors with a best place for playing beach volleyball, sand castle building, and kite flying. Moreover, there is a place called ‘dolphin spot’ where we can witness dolphins porpoising while boating. This [boating in sea] is however recommended only for youngsters.

Further the beach is the spot for various festive activities and other cultural events. One such event is ‘Malabar Mahotsavam’. This event will involve performances of various artists from diverse locations of Kerala. It is undoubtedly a feast for the eyes.

Since discussed, a short glimpse on Malabar Mahotsavam. It is organized in the January of every year, to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Malabar. So if you are visiting during January, do not forget to witness this event.

Kozhikode beach is located near the famous ‘SM Street of Kozhikode'. SM street is the food street of Kozhikode, and offers a wide range of mouth watering recipes. Don’t forget to visit SM street, if you are in Kozhikode beach.

The best place to stay is Arayidathupalam or Eranhipalam in Kozhikode. These places are  recommended, since the beach is just less than 4 kms from these places.

Alappuzha Beach

Alappuzha is a place which is naturally beautified with its backwaters and the serene green shores it has. Alappuzha, also referred to as ‘Alappey’, is naturally festooned with its backwaters, beaches, lagoons, and canals.

Alappuzha is graced with nine beautiful beaches. Here in this blog we will cover Alappuzha’s main beach, and the Marari beach. These are must-see places. 
If you are planning to visit Alappuzha beach, don’t forget to visit the Marari beach.

Alappuzha's main beach is the most attractive beach among those nine beaches. There is a small park adjacent to the beach, which also attracts more tourists. The beach is also enriched with the presence of a lighthouse nearby.

For visiting Alappey beach, you can try staying in house boats or home stays at Thathampalli or  Punnamada, in Alappuzha. The distance between these places and the beach is around 4 to 6 kms. You can also stay in Alappuzha beach resorts, if you have a relatively higher budget. Of course, there are affordable resorts too.

Marari Beach

This beach is located in Alappey, and is one among the nine beaches located there. The gold sands, long grown coconut trees, caressing cold breeze, together with the calm atmosphere is definitely a good destination for family and friends.

This beach should definitely be included in your itinerary. The beach being less crowded, offers a perfect spot even for the couples to enjoy the serene with some privacy.

Hotels near Mararikulam beach

If you are planning to visit Marari beach, you can stay at Kanichukulangara. Kanichukulangara is very close to the Marari beach. 
You can plan to visit both Alappuzha beach and Marari beach together.

As both Alappey beach and Marari beach are located in Alappuzha, you can consider staying at Punnamada, so that you can visit both the main beach and Marari beach. Punnamada is very close to Alappuzha's main beach, so it is best to stay there and travel to Marari beach. Travelling from Punnamada to Mararikulam will take around 30 to 40 minutes. 

You can also consider staying at any resorts near Marari beach, if you have a decent budget. There are resorts at Kanichukulangara, which is close to Marari beach. But, staying at a resort in Punnamada is suggested if you are planning to visit both the main beach and Marari beach. 

Cherai Beach:

This magnificent beach is located at Vypin island near Kochi. The golden sands, elegant sunset, and chinese fishing nets offer a perfect treat to the eyes.

There are many sea shells on the shore, which makes it a better place for those who love ‘beach combing’. There are many street food stalls nearby the beach, which should never be missed.

You can try staying in any hotels at Ayyampilly in Kochi. There you may feel that the hotel rent is more affordable. 

Fort Kochi Beach

Fort Kochi beach is another beauty in Kerala's west coast. As said about all the above beaches, this too is characterised with enchanting atmosphere, greenery, and nearby food stalls.

If you are interested in watching ships, then you would love watching cargo ships passing from the beach shores.

There are many places to visit near Fort Kochi. So, even if both Cherai and Fort Kochi beaches are in one city, it is advisable to stay in any hotels near Fort Kochi.

If you have a decent budget, and plan to stay for two days or more, you can consider staying at any good resorts in Fort Kochi.

Snehatheeram Beach

Snehatheeram beach is located in Thalikkulam village of Thrissur district. The beach is adorned with a serene atmosphere, and a clean beach shore.

The pristinity of the beach makes it perfect spot for sun bath, walking on the shores, and swimming. However, people mainly visit here just to admire the beauty of the sunset from the shores. As said for other beaches, this too has many food stalls and restaurants adjacent to it. They offer a wide variety of sea foods and other foods. Further, the beach has a children’s park with it. Varkala Beach

Varkala beach is located in Thiruvananthapuram, which is the southernmost district of Kerala. This beach is also referred to as ‘Papanasam beach’.

There is an ancient temple nearby. The devotees there believe this water to purify their sins, and thus it received the name ‘Papanasam’, which means ‘destruction of sins’.

This beach is definitely a paradise for adventure lovers. The beach compliments the adventure lovers with sports like parasailing, surfing, paragliding, and stand-up paddle boarding.

As always there are many food stalls and some shops nearby.

Another thing about Varkala beach is the ‘Varkala cliff’. It is the only beach in South Kerala, which has a cliff nearby. The ‘Geological Survey of India has described the cliffs as a ‘National Geological Monument’.

Kovalam Beach

Kovalam beach is a very elegant beach located in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala.

The beach is characterized by tropical sunlight which definitely ensures the tan. There are many facilities like ayurvedic centers, shopping facilities, yoga centers, etc nearby. There are also budget cottages nearby. All these things make it perfect for admiring as a family.

As a cherry on the cake, there is a very famous lighthouse called ‘Vizhinjam Lighthouse’, at the close vicinity of the beach. If you are visiting Kovalam beach, don’t miss the lighthouse. On climbing the lighthouse, you would enjoy the cold breeze. There are many places for accommodation near the beach. Moreover, there are many other places to visit nearby too.
